A research study published in Pharmaceutics in 2022 by Troshina et al. explores how water-soluble C60 fullerene derivatives, modified carbon-based nanoparticles, can block influenza virus replication. The study shows these compounds protect cells from a range of influenza strains, offering potential for new antiviral treatments.
In simple terms, influenza (flu) viruses mutate quickly, making them hard to treat as they become resistant to existing drugs. The researchers tested a group of C60 fullerene-based compounds, which are tiny, soccer-ball-shaped molecules, to see if they could stop the flu virus from infecting cells. They found that these compounds, especially one called compound 2, were highly effective at preventing the virus from spreading in lab tests while being safe for cells (with a high safety index). Compound 2 showed strong virus-blocking power at a low dose (4.73 µg/mL) and low toxicity (safe up to 300 µg/mL).
This study highlights C60 derivatives as promising broad-spectrum antivirals for influenza. These findings suggest that these fullerene-based compounds could lead to new, effective flu treatments, addressing the challenge of drug-resistant strains
